postliminy

In Roman antiquity, the return of a person who had been banished, or taken prisoner by an enemy, to his old condition and former privileges.

In international law, that right by virtue of which persons and things taken by an enemy in war are restored to their former status when coming again under the power of the nation to which they belonged.

The word 'postliminy' comes from a Latin word meaning 'threshold'.

This reverses the earlier rule of "no take-backs"

A skeptic.

Wordnik Word of the Day for October 09, 2014

anosmia

In pathology, a loss of the sense of smell.

The loss of smell is called anosmia, and Davidson said that people might not appreciate how significant it can be.
Serena Gordon, 'Homeopathic Nasal Zinc Linked to Loss of Smell,' U.S. News & World Report, July 20, 2010

'Anosmia' comes from the Greek 'an-,' without, plus 'osme,' odor.

A loss of the sense of smell can be a good thing in some cases (and we won't mention why - EW)

but it can also be bad. A lot of taste comes from our sense of smell. That's one reason why foods taste so blah when you have a stuffed up nose.

Impostor in the news

Posted by on in The Imposter

gtweekly.com's Wendy Mayer-Lochtefeld writes this about an Impostor event that took place in Santa Cruz just a little while ago:

Finally, who is Pseudonymous Bosch? ... From what we can tell, he’s the bestselling author of the Secret series, a lover of dark chocolate and stinky cheese, and a very bad magician. He says that his new series, Bad Magic, is his way of getting to be, by proxy, the magician he was never able to be, but his book tells a different story. Clay hates magic, and yet, when he finds himself transported to a camp for troubled kids on a volcanic island, magic may be his only way out. Will Pseudonymous Bosch ever tell us his real name? Possibly. Will he keep writing great books for middle-school readers? Absolutely. “At that age you’re still open to having your notions of the world and universe turned upside down, and to see the magical possibilities.” Well put, but readers coming to the event remain curious. Will there be magic? Should they bring chocolate? Would that be cheesy? It remains a mystery.
